«ACQUISITION OF THE HOMELAND». TO THE PROBLEM OF THE PLACE OF THE MIDDLE VOLGA AND TRANS-VOLGA REGION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF RUSSIAN CIVILIZATION AND STATEHOOD (FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE XVI TO THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURIES)
Abstract
Considerable experience of studying the history of the Middle Volga region let us to address a new scientific problem: complex and controversial process of «acquisition of the homeland». The planned study will be focused on the specific features of social and economic, administrative, political and cultural development of the Middle Volga region as a part of the Russian state, on the formation of the unique social and cultural character and regional identity of its population.
NATIONAL AND CONFESSIONAL POLICY OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN CONTEMPORARY HISTORIOGRAPHY
Abstract
The paper analyzes the problems and conceptual approaches of researches on the history of national and confessional policy of the Russian Empire, which were published in the last two decades. Through the prism of historiography the author shows the history of imperial policy in the Volga-Ural region, primarily with respect to such categories of population as steppe nomads, Muslims, pagans, baptized «aliens». The particular attention is paid to the debates around education policy of the Russian Empire in the region.
NOBILITY OF THE VOLGA REGION OF THE SECOND HALF OF XIX - THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY: HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE PROBLEM
Abstract
In the article works of Soviet and modern Russian researchers on the history of nobility of the Volga Region of the second half of XIX - the beginning of the XX century are characterized, achievements and prospects of development of domestic historiography in this direction are revealed.
FISHERY IN THE ECONOMICAL ACTIVITIES OF RURAL POPULATION OF SOUTHERN MIDDLE VOLGA ON THE BOUND OF XVII-XVIII CENTURIES
Abstract
In the article the development of fishery in the economical activities of rural population of Southern Middle Volga on the bound of XVII-XVIII centuries. The author concludes that fishery was poorly developed on that area besides some settlements situated on Volga and Kama coastal zones. Fishery played a secondary role in the daily economical activities of the local population.
RANK REFORM OF THE END OF THE 1670 - BEGINNING OF 1680 AND ITS REALIZATION IN THE TOWNS OF THE LOWER REACHES
Abstract
The article is devoted to the military rank reform of tsar Feodor Alekseevich at the end of 1670 - beginning of 1680. Reform preconditions, legislative acts and their consequences for Russian army are considered. In the work carrying out and consequences of rank reform in the towns of the lower reaches, management of military forces of this territory are analyzed.

In this article the author have considered the notion of ruling elite in conformity with the first half of the XVIII century and quantitative correlation between the foreigners and the Russians in the composition of ruling group in this period.

Abstract
The article deals with the conditions under which the dualism of faith and buddist outlook emerged among christened Kalmyks on the territory of South-Eastern frontier of European Russia in the XVIII-XIX centuries. Archaeological evidence is supplied to confirm the existence of Buddhist traditions in that area.

The article deals with history of formation, growth, division of the largest landowners’ estates of the Volga region belonging to the Orlovs and Orlov-Davidovs. The role of the owners of serf patrimonies and their peasants in the settlement and landreclamation in the South-East of European Russia is shown.

Abstract
In the article the participation of clergy in the realization of school reforms of Alexander I and Nikolay I on the territory of Kazan educational okrug is analyzed. The support of clergy played a considerable role in the formation of comprehensive schools in Russia in whole and in the Volga Region in particular.

The article deals with the image of Cossacks, formed in the beginning of the XX century. Special attention is given to the external appearance of women of Don, Orenburg, Transbaikal and Ural Cossack troops. Traits and fighting qualities of Cossack women are considered separately.

Abstract
The article deals with the process of formation of scientific organization of agriculture in the Samara Region in the early XX century. The history of organization of first agronomic research institutions that studied the characteristics of farming in specific conditions of arid Volga River basin is revealed. Forms of popularization of new methods of management, introduction of theoretical developments in practice of farming are studied.
SOCIAL AND POLITICAL DIFFERENTIATION OF POPULATION OF THE VOLGA REGION IN 1917

In the article social and political differentiation of the population of the Volga region, shown in the election campaigns of 1917 is presented; social and economic requirements of workers, soldiers, peasants are revealed; ways of influence of society on power in revolution are analysed.
