Abstract

The article studies the linguopragmatic potential of deictic means in inaugural addresses of American presidents from 1913 to 2013. Inaugural addresses are considered to be a special traditional genre of political discourse and therefore they possess some linguistic instruments that lead to success in communication. Deixis is one of such instruments. Being a category of pragmatics deixis is polyfunctional. Using deictic means in speech American presidents perform needed linguistic manipulations, apply communicative strategies of positive self-presentation, appeal to the feeling of national pride, create the image of enemy the nation needs to fight with, inspire the idea of unity and equality among politicians and common citizens.
