Abstract

The article is dedicated to the study of the armed forces of the Lower Reaches cities in the first half of the XVII century. The analysis of the list of noble families of 1615–1624 shows that the years of the Time of Troubles made a negative impact on their combat capability and strength. It is shown that military forces in the region in the mid-1620s – the eve of the Smolensk war, were mostly represented by local people of the Volga region. The mobility of service class people was considered. It was revealed that only a small contingent of service class people of the region took part in the Smolensk War. It was concluded that the population has grown, but the composition has not changed significantly after the war. The basis of the armed forces of the region was formed from Streltsy and Cossacks after the war. At the same time there was a large part of local population in their structure.
