Abstract
The article is devoted to the biography of his serene Highness Prince N.I. Saltykov (1736–1816), the key milestones of his 68 years of service to the Russian Imperial Household. He was a contemporary of seven rulers of the Russian Empire, and he served five of them. He didn’t fall, and his career had developed the most successful way. Many contemporaries gave negative characteristics to Saltykov, but he was awarded many honors and awards, using the great trust of the members of.the Imperial family. The author tries to determine how valid are conclusions about him by his contemporaries and analyzes various sources (letters, notes, diaries of his contemporaries), attracts with archival material.
