FUNCTIONS OF PRECEDENT PHENOMENA IN FORMAL DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article deals with precedent phenomena in IMF officials’

speeches. Functions of precedent phenomena in the speeches and

their sources are analyzed. Apart from phatic and text-creating

functions which are the most frequent in formal communication

persuasive function that can be studied on all the levels of discourse

is acknowledged as dominant.
