Abstract

The modern literature notes an increased interest to the war as an

existential «Other», that reflects the needs of a modern man to test the

human spirit. The purpose of the article is to show, that in the situation

of the deficit of the «Other», the German language novel of 1990–

2000 searches for the existential «Other», using a postmodern aesthetic

and new forms of reconstruction of existential experience. The characters

of the novels desperately archive and collect signs of the war, insisting

that the war can be a metaphor to describe any extreme and tragic

experiences. This is illustrated in the novels by B. Schlink Der Vorleser,

K. Kracht Faserland, M. Bayer Flughunde, K. Ransmayr Morbus

Kitahara, E. Jelinek Kinder der Toten, K. Hacker Der Bademeister.
