Abstract
The article deals with the peculiarities of exploitation of a child’s image by an American literature for children of the middle of XIX century as a means of mythologization of public conscience. Post-bellum reconsideration of the antithesis «friend or foe» promoted the reduction of predeveloped by N. Hawthorne’s myth «voluntary captive» to the component «successful mariage» which is proved by the existence in the novel by M. Dodge «The Silver Skates» of the resonance between the fates of the girl and a caged bird.
