Abstract
This article discusses the pragmatic potential of XX century American painting titles from the perspective of logical pragmatics, developed by Herbert Paul Grice, and relevance theory, suggested by Deidre Wilson and Dan Sperber. This theoretic framework allows to analyze painting titles in reference to the inferential account of communication and multilevel cultural context.
