«IT IS HARD TO BE AN EMPEROR»: THE IMAGE OF PAUL I IN THE HISTORICAL MEMORY AT THE END OF THE XIX - THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY

Abstract

The article is devoted to the image of Emperor Paul I in the Russian historical science and arts at the turn of the XIX- XX centuries; it is argued that the evolution of this image mirrored the internal contradictions in the minds of Russian intellectuals and in their attitudes to the autocratic power.
