Abstract

The offensive of the 2nd Ukrainian Front to Budapest was launched Oct. 29, 1944 in haste and without proper preparation. The defense of the enemy was broken and on November 5 mechanized units reached the line of 10–15 kilometers from the Hungarian capital. But the enemy was able to regroup their forces and inflicted flanking counterattack, resulting in mechanized corps moved from Budapest. The Supreme Command revised their plans and issued a directive to prepare a new offensive; the capture of Budapest has been delayed for several months.
