THE IMAGE OF CLAGGART AS THE QUINTESSENSE OF EVIL IN HERMAN MELVILLE’S «BILLY BUDD»

Abstract

 The paper examines the idea of absolute antagonist, reflected in the character of Claggart in Herman Melville’s novel «Billy Budd». The artistic logic of reasoning of the author on the significance of study of the dark sides of human soul is traced.
