Scenary metonymy: mechanism of formation and some varieties

Abstract

In the article scenery metonymy as a variety of lexical metonymy which is singled out within the frameworks of typology suggested by the author is viewed. Typology which includes scenery type of metonymy is correlated with the concept of linguistic view of the world and is based on considering connections of transferring of lexical units with type of the concept which organizes knowledge on corresponding denotation. The dependence of the event of scenery metonymy by the structure of script as a variety of the concept is shown. The most widespread models of scenery metonymy on the material of verbal vocabulary are described.

EVALUATIVE SUFFIXES OF СOMMON NOUNS IN THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE OF THE XI–XVII CENTURIES (ON THE BASIS OF LEXICOGRAPHICAL DATA)

Abstract

The article presents the system of evaluative suffixes of nouns in the Russian language of the XI–XVII centuries, and shows the main sources of its research. Morphological and semantic characteristics of affixes are investigated at the diachronic level, semantic transformations of word-formational suffix morphemes are traced, their frequency and productivity are determined. Special attention is paid to the analysis of interpretation of evaluative meanings of suffixes in the national linguistics; the article explores the fundamental question of evaluative nature of diminutive suffixes to which there is no uniform answer, views on this question suggested by linguists are compared.

The article is aimed at describing the main characteristics of communicative strategies within the contemporary American society based on the dramatic materials published in 1985–2014. The communicative trends described in the present article reflect the specific aspects of American speakers’ speech behavior that occur under the influence of stylized spoken English. On the other hand, these specific features occur due to universal markers of American dramatic discourse providing the mobility of its border parameters.

Abstract

Сognitive aspects of verbal titles to the paintings created by British and American artists are considered in the article. Moreover, the priority positions of the key concepts forming the verbal space of the above titles are discussed in terms of discursive markers. On the linguistic material presented by the titles of pictures, the priority positions of the concepts taking place in the organization of the verbal space of small-scale texts of the titles of pictures describing the world of childhood on verbal level are shown.
