The motive of «ordeals» that Dmitriy Karamazov goes through during the preliminary investigation is investigated. The motive is used to express the main idea of the novel - possibility of person’s spiritual renovation, regardless of his depravity, even in conditions of moral decline of society. Though the character is pleaded guilty by «publicans» - vicious judges, from the stand-point of orthodox humanism, from this very moment his spiritual renovation begins.
