Abstract

The article considers the origin of names for residential complexes in Russian onomastic space. The author treats this type of proper names as a variation of urbanonyms – oikodomonyms (names of buildings). The names of residential complexes have not only an address function but also an advertising one thus occupying an intermediate position between classical urbanonyms and advertising names. The author notes that residential complexes acquire names as a result of artificial nomination reflecting the taste of the nominators and not limited by any legal rules. The author analyses the structure of the names dividing them into two parts: urbanonymic term and onymic part. It is noted in the article that the two urbanonymic terms prevailing in Russian cities are residential complex and residential district. The author indicates 3 main principles in naming residential complexes: location of the object, features of exterior appearance, prestigiousness of the object. The necessity of designing general principles for naming residential complexes and the expertise of the names is mentioned in the article.
