Assessing the impact of non-through cracks (scratches) on the structural strength when designing aircraft

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to determine the area of possible ultimate states of a plate made of an ideal elastoplastic material in a plane taut state, with the plate having a blind fractured defect (a scratch). This problem is of a more general character and presents a greater practical interest than just a scratch problem since in thinwalled constructions and enclosures whether it be plane fuselage or rocket fuel tanks etc. there always exist damages resulting from external actions and transforming into scratches in the process of operation.

It their turn, scratch dimensions will gradually increase as a result of cyclic loads arising during operation. There naturally arises a problem of determining the ultimate dimensions of these defects which can result in the fatal failure of the whole structure at a given level of operating loads.
