Abstract

The article deals with the subject of suffixal word-formation models and their functioning within the subject registers of the academic language. Analysis of certain patterns enabled to reveal the correlation between the choice of suffixes and the methodological properties of particular academic disciplines. Etymological rules governing the formation of terminological synonyms were studied, as well as instances of affix specialization in certain subject genres and specific functions of suffixes that emerge in the languages of sciences. Attention is drawn to cases of intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary variation in the use of suffixation.
