Abstract
The article deals with the emergence of writing in the eastern Slavs. It proposes a linguistic interpretation of the problem, based on the analysis of textual sources and linguistic data, substantiates the allegations of inaccuracy of East Slavic proto Glagolitic alphabet and translations of biblical books in the Russian language before Cyril.
